US Stocks Advance After Worst Start to Year in Decades

US stocks rose to start the second half of the year, a day after a Thursday decline that closed out the broad index’s worst first half of the year since 1970.

The S&P 500 was recently up 0.6% Friday afternoon, offering investors a respite after a downbeat second quarter that reflected fears that the Federal Reserve’s efforts to tame inflation could tip the economy into a recession. The S&P, which has dropped into a bear marketremains on course to finish this week in the red for the 11th time in the past 13 weeks.
