Since 1977, the Lower Haight restaurant has served up fried catfish, jambalaya, peach cobbler and other Southern comfort food. The 401 Haight St. location is a registered legacy San Francisco business.
“It is with a mixture of emotions that I inform you that I have decided to sell the remainder of my lease for Two Jack’s Nik’s Place at 401 Haight and our last day will be on July 14th 2022,” Cooper wrote in her Instagram post. “I’m excited to be able to provide this space to another restauranteur who will bring a new and vibrant energy to the Lower Haight.”
Cooper is the second generation owner of Two Jack’s and in 2013 received the Certificate of Honor from San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors for continuing her family’s legacy as well as bringing live jazz back to the neighborhood. She also received an award for entrepreneurship in 2019 from the NAACP.
Since taking over the restaurant in 2006, Cooper also was recognized by the Museum of Food and Drink in New York, shared her garlic bread prawn po’boys on NBC’s “Today Show,” and shot a cooking video with Danny Glover, according to Eater SF.
“When I bought the business 16 years ago I was determined to restore and reinvent our brand,” continued Cooper’s post. “… It has been a true honor to be able to serve our community, build lifelong relationships and make history in the city I was born and raised in.”
The restaurant’s second location, Two Jack’s at 984 Gilman Ave. in the Bayview, will remain open. The Haight Street staff will relocate to that location, Cooper wrote on Instagram. Meanwhile, Cooper has recently accepted a position as the new program director for the San Francisco African American Chamber of Commerce. The restaurant could not be reached for comment at time of publication.
