How does Michaela Coel—developer of Chewing Gum and I Might Damage You, BAFTA and Emmy winner, and author of Misfits: An Individual Manifesto—mark the memorable celebration of appearing on the cover of U.S. Style? You may be imagining Champagne and caviar, however Coel is more subtle than that, deciding rather to collect her friends (“my the first day,” as she explains them) for a home-cooked meal. “They asked me how I wished to commemorate, and I believed, Why not prepare food, consume it, and play video games?” states Coel, displaying a mix of kontomire stew and egusi soup that she calls “Nigeria fulfills Ghana.”
It was Coel who pitched Ghana, her moms and dads’ birth place, as the area for her Style cover, and her good friends push her to stop and take pride because. “I’m one of those individuals that usually doesn’t process huge occasions,” confesses Coel, laughingly associating her hostility to applaud to being “British and Ghanaian…they’re both cultures that decline compliments, so I can’t take the flowers that you’re attempting to offer me.”
After a post-cooking attire modification, it’s time for Coel to take a seat with her long time buddies and get video game night going. The discussion streams quickly into a semi-roast, with Coel adoringly calling among her good friends out for using “the type of African beads you purchase from Amazon dot com” when they initially fulfilled at drama school. Coel and her sweethearts then take a minute to delight in the significance of women who appear like them seeing Coel in Style, prior to belief is done without and a video game of Snake Eyes starts. As the dice is tossed, it’s clear the night is far from over.
