Free outdoor movies in Massachusetts this summer; watch ‘Encanto,’ ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ and more

One of the best parts of summer is being outdoors in the warmth. Between going hiking to having a relaxing day at the beach, there are many day-time activities that one can do but what about at night?

Luckily for people in and near Massachusetts, several cities and towns have planned outdoor movie night series. Make sure to bring blankets, chairs and snacks.

Find the one closest to you below.


Celebrating the Discovery Museum’s 40th Anniversary, the museum will be holding two movie nights on their lawn. Before the movie, sustainability themed hands-on activities will be available such as exploring renewable energy.

VeeBop’s Ice Cream truck will have frozen treats for viewers to enjoy and restrooms will be available.

A free movie is offered every third Thursday through October at The Mill District in Amherst. Pre-activities start at 6 pm and the movie begins at dusk.

Patriot Place’s “Summer Flicks” series has begun. Located at the DORA Zone outside Renaissance Boston Patriot Place Hotel and Saga Hibachi Steakhouse on Wednesday nights.

Movies begin at sunset but there is pre-entertainment at 6 pm

Aug. 24: “Spider-Man: No Way Home”

Movies by Moonlight Fridays” hosted by Boston Harbor Hotel is also displaying several movies against the backdrop of the starlit harbor.

“Movies Under the Stars” will happen every Wednesday starting later in July movies will play on a 17 foot wide screen.

There are two movies each Wednesday on the library lawn.

Aug. 3: “My Dog Skip” at 6 pm and “Dog” at 8 pm

Aug. 10: “Sing” at 6 pm and “The Greatest Showman” at 8 pm

Movies will be shown every Thursday at 8 pm at Mashpee Village Green, which is across from the library. The movie series will go until Aug. 25.

Movies in the Park” in Springfield began on Monday and will continue until the end of July. This long-awaited movie series comes annually and began in 2017 but was postponed due to the pandemic, returning in 2021.

Family friendly will be held in Marshall Roy Park, Calhoun Park, Myrtle Street Park and Nathan Bill Park and are free to the public.

All movies will begin at 8:15 pm There will be no rain dates.

Movies on the Common” will return to the Common for the first time in two years after pandemic restrictions forced the city to change the event to “Movies on the Lot.”

“In partnership with the city, we’ve hosted these free movie screenings in a nearby lot for the past two years, so people could be socially-distanced in their cars,” Evelyn Darling, executive director of the Downtown Worcester Improvement District, said . “As much as we enjoyed the drive-in style experience, we are excited that current COVID guidance allows us to host the movies in the fresh air and green space of the common this year.”

Movies start at around 6:30 pm Attendees can bring their own seating or use seating available. Refreshments are also available on-site for purchase.

July 21: “Encanto”

Aug. 18: “Spider-Man: No Way Home”


In August, “Screen on the Green” will begin, showing movies outdoors on a big screen at 8:30 pm on Thursday nights. Uhlman’s Ice Cream and BORO SugarShack will be available for purchase.

Before the first movie begins, there will be a concert at 7 pm by Jumpin Juba, a blues-based and classic rock band.
