First case of human-to-dog monkeypox transmission found in Paris

Dogs are among animals susceptible to catching monkeypox after a canine believed to have acquired the virus through human transmission was reported in Paris, the CDC said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now list 10 animals, including dogs, gerbils and hamsters, that can be infected with monkeypox, which the US declared a public health emergency this month.

Two men who had sex with men went to a hospital in Paris on June 10, as published in the Lancet. One man (patient 1) is 44, Latino and lives with HIV; the second man (patient 2) is 27, white and HIV-negative. The men are nonexclusive partners living in the same household.

Human-to-human transmission of monkeypox virus usually occurs through close contact with the lesions, body fluids and respiratory droplets of infected people or animals.

The men arrived at the hospital with anal ulceration six days after sex with other partners. In patient 1, anal ulceration was followed by a rash on the face, both monkeypox symptoms.

The men said that they let their dog, a 4-year-old Italian greyhound, sleep with them. Medical staff matched one of the owners’ infections to the one detected in the greyhound.

“These men obviously love their dog because he sleeps with them, but If you have monkeypox, you should stay away from your pets,” said William Schaffner, a professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University. “It may be necessary to have a friend care for your pet for a while if you think you won’t be able to resist patting them or letting them sleep with you or sit with you on the couch.”

Schaffner said the dog will likely make a full recovery.

“This case will make a lot of pet owners anxious,” he said, “but I would hope they all take a deep breath and remember this has been found in only one animal.”
