Fashion blogger pushed off building with hands and legs tied, husband arrested

A Ghaziabad-based fashion blogger died after being pushed off a building in Agra, allegedly by her husband and his family, police said, adding that the accused also tied her hands and legs before throwing her off.

Police identified the victim as 30-year-old Ritika Singh and said they have arrested her husband Aakash Gautam and two others.

Police said Gautam was angry over the woman staying with a friend at an apartment in Agra, and an argument between the two ended in the fatal incident.

“We received information that a woman died after falling off the fourth floor of a building in the Nagla Mewati area. During the investigation, it was found that she had been staying with a friend at the flat. Her husband came with his family members on Friday and an argument broke out, and she was eventually pushed off the building, ”said Sudhir Kumar Singh, SSP Agra.

The woman had been living there for the last one and a half years, police said.

Ritika had a BSc degree and had pursued a course in social media and blogging, her family said. She began a fashion, lifestyle, and travel blogging social media account two years ago and had amassed more than 44,000 followers on Instagram.

She met Aakash in 2014 and the two got married. Her family alleged that he would live off her earnings as he did not have any fixed source of income.

“It was very clear that she would provide money for the family. She worked as a teacher in a school and maintained a social media profile on the side. Aakash’s entire family would pressure her, ”alleged Utkarsh Singh, her brother.

Her family alleged that a few years into the marriage, she started being physically abused, and in one instance, was burnt with a hot iron.

“She told us that Aakash’s family was abusive. They would beat her up and threaten her with dire consequences,” alleged Utkarsh.

Tired of the abuse, she shifted from Firozabad and began living with her friend, whom she had met on Facebook, in a rented apartment.

Meanwhile, Aakash’s family kept pressing her to return, said her family.

On Friday, Aakash and four other persons, including two women, went to the woman’s colony. To gain entry, they told a different house number to the guard at the society’s entrance. Once they reached her house, there was an argument between the woman’s friend and Aakash, which escalated. Her friend was tied up and locked up in the bathroom, said police. The balcony then allegedly tied Ritika’s hands and legs and threw her off the.

Locals in the colony were shocked to see Ritika’s body tied up and bleeding on the ground. Her friend tried to scream and alert the neighbors from the bathroom window, said police.

Police said two persons are absconding.

“It is a brutal murder meant to send a signal. There has to be justice for her,” said Ritika’s brother.
