Emerging fashion designers receive backing from Italian fashion houses

Italy has long been home to some of fashion’s most prominent houses, and more emerging labels have been benefiting from design competitions and incubator projects launched by top labels.

After supporting Korean designer Miss Sohee, Italian luxury label Dolce & Gabbana is now holding the torch for emerging British fashion designer Matty Bovan ahead of his catwalk debut at Milan Fashion Week in September 2022.

The York-born London-based designer and Leeds Beckett University professor will be supplied with fabrics and materials from the Italian house to develop his Spring/Summer 2023 collection.

Bovan said in an official press release: “Craft and handiwork are at the heart of my work, something that myself and this iconic maison have great affinity with.

“The synergy upon meeting Domenico and Stefano recently was palpable. I’m still processing the idea that I am going to be exploring their archives and mixing their historic work with my new output for next spring. I’m already feeling the turbo charge of this alliance.”

For founders Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the designer is a natural fit. “The colors, proportions and energy of Matty Bovan’s work reveal the tremendous research and creative process behind each piece,” says the duo. “We immediately had a special understanding with him.”

In partnership with the Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI), Valentino selected Act N.1 as the second emerging brand it will support virtually during Milan Fashion Week.

In the spirit of feeding the energy that reigns among the new generation of designers, and in supporting the fashion system, the Roman label and Creative Director Pierpaolo Piccioli have “decided to open the doors of their digital spaces and offer designers the opportunity to present their work and message”.

Pierpaolo Piccioli, Creative Director of Maison Valentino said: “The work of Galib Gassanoff and Luca Lin is light and profound as the gaze of every young designer should be and perhaps how all ours should be. Multiculturalism, respect for diversity and celebration of the human coexist without dogmatism, without presumption in a free and courageous creativity.

“I believe that supporting talents capable of combining beauty with the offering of a reflection is our responsibility, as well as interesting, because fashion can do a lot and has a lot to offer, always. I sincerely hope it is the first of many acts “

Luca Lin and Galib Gassanoff, ACT N°1 Creative Directors added: “We are very happy and more than honored to have been selected by Pierpaolo Piccioli as guests on Valentino’s social media accounts for the presentation of the new ACT N°1 collection in September . The values we represent are in harmony and real synergy with the values of Pierpaolo Piccioli and being supported by him makes us doubly pleased.”
