Cameron Diaz Is Leaving Retirement for Movie with Jamie Foxx

Cameron Diaz has officially joined the ranks of Justin Bieber, Tom Brady, and all the other celebrities who have un-retired themselves and returned to their industry anew. In other words: Diaz will act again.

The actress is set to costar with Jamie Foxx in a forthcoming Netflix comedy, aptly titled Back in Action. The project also marks a Hollywood reunion for Diaz and Foxx, who previously worked together on the 1999 sports drama Any Given Sunday and the 2014 musical remake of Annie.

Foxx relayed the good news on Twitter by sharing an audio clip from a phone call with Diaz.

“I feel excited, but I don’t know how to do this, ya know?” Diaz confesses to Foxx, who then brings in Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady to rally her on. (Brady famously announced his retirement earlier this year, just to reverse his decision 40 days later.)

“I was talking to Jaime and he said you need a few tips on how to un-retire,” Brady says in the recording. “I’m relatively successful at un-retiring.”

Foxx wrote in the Tweet, “Cameron I hope you aren’t mad I recorded this, but no turning back now. Had to call in the GOAT to bring back another GOAT. @CameronDiaz and I are BACK IN ACTION – our new movie with @NetflixFilm. Production starting later this year!!”

Diaz announced her retirement from acting in 2018.

In a 2020 interview with Gwyneth Paltrow, who is also retired from the industry, Diaz explained why she left Hollywood.

“I just decided that I wanted different things out of my life,” she said. “I had gone so hard for so long, working, making films and it’s such a grind. I didn’t really make any space for my personal life.”

And earlier this year, while speaking exclusively with BAZAAR.comshe reflected on how different her life has been since she stopped appearing on the big screen and started her own organic-grape wine company, Avaline.

“I mean everything about my life is different,” she said at the time. “The pace of this business is there’s something new all the time, so it keeps us pretty busy in what we participate in. But, yeah, my life is just completely different than when I was making movies. It’s just, I don’t make movies anymore, so it’s like my whole life is just like [opens arms as if to say, ‘This is what peace looks like’], just different. A lot less travel, a lot more sleep, my skin’s clearer because I don’t have so much makeup on all the time.”
