A Trick for Staying Present

joanna 7

Last Sunday had been some of those fall that is perfect in New York City that make you forget all the reasons this city drives you nuts and fall in love with it all over again. So, I left my phone at home, and Anton that is nine-year-old and shot to popularity on a bike trip. We bump-bump-bumped over cobblestone roads and passed partners cards that are playing picnic blankets. We stopped at a market for lemonade, then drank it on a bench facing the water.

It was pretty magical. But a thing that is weird taking place.

Now and once again, my hand would absentmindedly achieve into my case and fumble for my phone, before we’d keep in mind it absolutely wasn’t here. I did not also want my phone, my hand had been simply used to that grab that is periodic. How often do I pull this thing out? We begun to wonder. And what have always been we lacking once I do?

From our park workbench, we seemed all around us: Anton’s blonde locks ruffled within the wind. A toddler endured, belly forward, viewing her mom blow bubbles. Two dudes rode by on the bikes, one without the need for their fingers! A ferry that is blue down the East River, and the sunshine made the waves sparkle.

I Remembered a

NYTimes interview

with cartoonist Lynda Barry — have it is read by you? — by which she told this tale:“I have actually a pal who is a writer. Regardless of what we are doing or who he is around, he is on their phone. We had been sitting away in a parking great deal, and there was clearly some guy whom arrived who was simply in this orc that is full with a shield. I thought, I’m not going to say anything. Let’s see if my friend looks up. The guy passed right it was outside a hotel — tried to get through a revolving door by him and. There is all of this ba that is bump ba bump, and if my friend would have looked up, he would have seen an orc go by! But he never looked up! Then later he was told by me, in which he’s like, ‘That did not take place!’ It completely did take place! Therefore one thing that closes you down towards the globe that you are in — after all, i really could be on TikTok all long night. I keep deleting that app it so much because I love. But something which goes from your environment, you spend a price that is high. You miss the orc.”This fall, as much as possible, I’m inspired to turn my phone off, place in a drawer, and simply take in the entire world. Possibly we’ll read poetry and publications (

appears great). We’ll appreciate my children that are sweet around. And find the freckles on my leg that Alex says look like the Big Dipper. And maybe stare into space?

Because, Honestly, seeing the global globe is simply good. “i actually do get a pleasure that is deep looking,” says artist David Hockney. “I mean, I can look at a puddle that is little a road in Yorkshire and simply have actually the rainfall dropping about it and think it is marvelous.”

Don’t be these dudes!PS Testing out parenting that is slow ups and downs of living in NYC, and do you worry too much?(Comic This post.)(*)8(* by Liam Walsh/(*)The New Yorker(*)via COMMENTS(*)
